Today we had the most amazing day of our trip so far! It’s a big call but Svalbard really is the most beautiful place I have ever been. Last night a polar bear with her cub wandered through our camp. Jaime was on bear watch at the time and he sent her running pretty fast.. guess he’s a pretty scary guy!! We’ve just made camp for the night (or day) in a tiny bay filled with curious seals, mountains surrounding us and the air filled with clouds of squawking birds. We put on the water at 9pm and paddled through the night, the sun shining down on us as we made our way past seven giant, tumbling glaciers – rivers of ice flowing into the ocean. The sea was still, the sky a vivid blue and the tundra soaked in green for the summer months. Everything about it was magical!! And to make it even better we saw no one. We’ve seen one ship on the horizon in the past two days, but have felt very much alone in this prefect wilderness. I feel so lucky. Tomorrow we’re on a mission to find the remains of a beluga whale which we’ve heard is currently being devoured by polar bears.. how cool would it be to see that?! Bear watch is nearly over for me, so time to get some sleep. It’s 8am and we will take turns sleeping throughout the day before we paddle through another night. Time seems irrelevant here and I love it!!
WOW! sounds so magical …
Hi you guys,
Sounds magical! and seems that you are all doing well. What an adventure….pics are beautiful.
Glad to hear mom and cub scampered away. Thinking of you all daily…xo Marianne & Charlie
This is shaping up to be a fantastic story. Put me down for a copy of the book when it comes out. Its great to see you are in NO rush … have a great northern summer. J.
How come you guys are choosing to paddle at night instead of during the day?
